A tip from Nadav Gablinger: Christmas Market at the Sony Centre

Where can you surf the Internet for free in Berlin?

Unfortunately, not in many places. Most wireless networks (WLAN) in the city are protected by password, and cannot be accessed for free. Not even Starbucks, which can be relied on in other countries, provides free services. You can surf for a fee (hefty, mind you) at Starbucks.

However, there are few places where you can get Internet access for free.

  • One such place is the Sony Centre in Potsdamer Platz - under the glas of the largest tent in the world, you can easily surf. The connection is said to be excellent - very fast.
  • Another place where you can surf for free (but probably must find an excuse for being there) is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Auswaertiges Amt).
  • Several cafes and pubs offer you the possibility to surf, you have to get an access code from the bar/cashier. Here is a list of cafes offering free WLAN in berlin (in German).

If you just want to surf for a few minutes for free - try a public library (though don't expect any friendly service for foreigners mooching on their Internet, and you might be expected to become a library member); or even those terminals at the bus stops (sometimes they'd be free for up to 20 minutes, but be careful later - anything more would cost 8 EUR and hour!!!). Please note, that the British Council was mentioned in earlier versions of this webpage: unfortunately, they don't offer this service anymore!
