Nadav's (partial) list of recommended restaurants in Berlin
There are so many great restaurants in Berlin, and it's difficult to recommend just a handful. However, here's a partial list
-
Arche Noah - (Aka "It's Gabriel") - Kosher restaurant inside the Jewish community centre Fasanenstrasse 79.
-
Hasir - Turkish restaurant with high standards. Nuernbergerstr.46 and several other branches in Berlin. The Kreuzberg branch was the first one in Berlin to serve Doener Kebab, back in 1971
-
Das 12. Apostel - Probably the best pizzas in Berlin. Georgenstr. 2, S/U Friedrichstr.
-
Engelbecken - German food at its best, with a nice view. Witzlebenstr. 31.
-
Yo Soy Tapas Bar - an excellent Spanish Bar/restaurant. Rosenthaler Strasse 37
-
Good Friends - the best Chinese (Hong Kong style) restaurant in Berlin. Kantstr. 30
-
Luisen Braeu - Brewery next to the Charlottenburg palace with excellent German food. Luisenplatz 1
- Mirchi - a Singaporean Restaurant with two branches, one on Oranienburgerstr. (S2, Oranienburgerstrasse) and the other on Oranienstr. (U1, Goerlitzer Park)
Restaurants areas:
- Savignyplatz - where veterans of the 1968 Students' Movement spend their time. A large variety of Indian restaurants and many others.
- Kollwitzplatz - "the Place" in Berlin if you are in your 20s-30s.
- Bergmannstr. - the taste of Berlin before the unification.

Typical Berlin Food: What is the typical Berlin food? Berlin is so multicultural, that it is difficult to say. However, there are few things that are typical here. Today, there are more Turkish Doener Kebab stands than German sausage stands! The typical Berlin sausage is the Currywurst (curry sausage), developed in 1949 by Mrs. Herta Heuwer. It is usually served with chips (Am.: French Fries), called here Pommes Frittes and with either ketchup, ketchup with curry, mayonnaise, or a mix of all of them together. For a "real" Currywurst experience, try the stand next to the U-Bahn station Mehringdamm (Curry 36) (although there are also other good places in Berlin to get a Curry: Kudamm 195; the organic Currywurst in Wittenbergplatz; etc.).
And what about the Doener? The Doener, similar to the Arab Shwarma, may be the most famous Turkish street food, but it is certainly not the only one: you can also try the Lahmacun (Turkish Pizza, pronounced Lah-machun in Turkish), which is just like an Italian pizza, only with minced meat on the top, instead of cheese and toppings. You can eat it rolled and filled with a salad. Another Turkish street food, for the vegetarians, is the Borek, filled pastry, and the Goezleme, warm filled pastry pockets. There are many fine Doener stands in Berlin, but unfortunately, most of those in the tourist areas are real traps, either because of the price, or because of the quality (and in the worse cases - because of both). An exception is the Hasir restaurant chain (mentioned above). Vegetarians who'd like to try a Lahmacun could try the only stand serving "vegetarian Lahmacun", on Oranienstr., not far from the Kotbusser Tor U-Bahn station. .
