The artist Gunter Demnig creates special memorials for the victims of the Nazi regime. He is replacing the normal cobblestones with ones, which commemorate a person who used to live in the house next to the stone and had been persecuted by the National-Socialists. "Humans are only forgotten if their name is forgotten" says Gunter Demnig on his website. With his work the name are not forgotten and the memory remains on the streets of Germany. The „stones" are made out of brass and the script on them says: “Hier Wohnte (Here Lived) ... A name, JG. (Birth Year), Deportiert (Deported)..., Ermordet (was murdered)...”
Gunter Deming created more than 6000 “stumbling stones” (Stolpersteine in German) in about 100 different locations all over Germany. His work is being sponsored trough donations. If you know of someone who knows an address of a Nazi victim and would like to commemorate his name can donate 95 Euro and in a few months the stone will be ready. Naturally, one can also donate to the project in general.
